The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has nine management groups: Business Group, Continuing and Specialised Care Group, Governance and Communication Group, Health Group, Hospitals and Performance Group, Housing and Homelessness Group, Information and Strategy Group, Social and Indigenous Group, and the ICT and Business Transformation Program. The Institute employs about 380 staff.
The Hospitals and Performance Group’s role is to provide statistical leadership, to develop and compile data, to undertake analyses and to disseminate policy relevant statistical information about hospitals and about health sector performance, including the safety and quality of health care.
The Hospitals Information Improvement Unit focusses on hospitals information development, particularly for admitted patients, elective surgery access and the safety and quality of hospital care. In addition, it is the AIHW’s focal point for health classifications (such as ICD-10-AM), contributing to national and international classification development work, and providing a source of expert advice for staff working with classifications and coded data. It also undertakes collaborative information development work with the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care.
The successful applicant will play a leading role in improving the quality, policy relevance and availability of national hospitals information, in collaboration with government agencies, other stakeholders and expert advisers.
Unit Heads make a major contribution to the formulation of strategies and objectives in line with corporate goals of the Institute, and take an active role in developing and promoting the Institute’s business activity. In addition to expertise in their professional field, they need advanced managerial skills to fulfil their supervisory responsibilities.
