The Board of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) is delighted to announce that Dr Paul Scown has been elected as the organisation’s new President. Dr Scown replaces Dr David Panter who will remain in the role of Immediate Past President for the next 12 months.
“Dr Scown brings to this role a wealth of experience in medicine, medical administration and general management across four States. His recent roles include Project Director, Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation, developing a charitable foundation and overseeing the construction of the Bernie Banton Centre at Concord NSW; as Interim Chief Operating Officer of the Brain & Mind Research Institute (BMRI) with the University of Sydney, assisting in the development of a new approach to interdisciplinary, cross-faculty research groups; and undertaking reviews within Community Health” Ms Prue Power, Executive Director, AHHA said today.
“From 2000-2005, Dr Scown was the Chief Executive of Melbourne Health, a major Victorian public health service. Paul headed Melbourne Health, which includes the Royal Melbourne Hospital, for 4 1/2 years, during a period of significant strategic and cultural change. He also led the financial and performance recovery of Melbourne Health. He has been a practising clinician and medical administrator before moving into general management in 1993. He has been a Board Director of the Walter & Eliza Hall Research Institute (WEHI), Bio21 Australia Ltd, Health Roundtable, Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation Ltd and the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI). Having been national Vice-President of the AHHA since 2003, Dr Scown has a depth of knowledge about our organisation that makes him an outstanding candidate for the role of President.
“The Board would also like to congratulate AHHA Board members Siobhan Harpur on her election as Vice-President and Felix Pintado on being re-elected as Treasurer. The AHHA is also pleased to welcome two new members Kathy Byrne and Annette Schmiede. The AHHA Council, which has members representing all states and territories, welcomes new members Kerrie Field, Elizabeth Koff, Andrew McAuliffe and Kathy Eagar in a new position as Academic Council Member. The Council would like to thank resigning members for their hard work and contribution to the work of the AHHA.
“On behalf of the AHHA, I would like to thank Dr Panter for his leadership during a critical period for health reform and welcome Dr Scown to his new role. With a strong leadership team and experienced and dedicated Board and Council members, AHHA will build on its impressive record of representing the public and not-for-profit health sectors at the federal level,” Ms Power said.
