Spokesperson:
QLD Minister for Health, The Hon Lawrence Springborg
Local control of hospitals and health services begins on July 1 - and nears conclusion today with the announcement of Board Members for the State’s Hospital and Health Boards.
Health Minister Lawrence Springborg says this is the final link in the process to restore local Health Boards to run their own services in communities across Queensland.
“This is a key commitment of the Newman Government,” Mr Springborg said.
“This path requires the selection of skilled locals who can help restore community confidence in local health services.”
Mr Springborg said the return of Hospital and Health Boards would spell an end to years of neglect and mismanagement by the former Labor Government.
He said devolved decision-making was a key part of the strategy to rebuild Queensland Health.
“With local boards in control of local health assets, clinicians and health workers will be able to work side-by-side with decision makers,” Mr Springborg said.
“This change is long-overdue and has been welcomed across this state.”
Mr Springborg said Boards would be invaluable in guiding the future management of local health resources, focused on patient care.
“They will be accountable for the performance of the Hospital and Health Boards in providing health services to meet local priorities and national standards.
“We’re getting on with the job of transforming the way our health services are governed.”
Mr Springborg said the appointments were the outcome of a transparent public recruitment process endorsed by the Governor in Council. “In many cases, representation on these boards will be increased once the start-up phase is complete,” he said. “Full devolution will enable communities to have a direct say in their local health services and it is vital that boards give full effect to that process.”
“I congratulate the appointees and look forward to their contributions to the improved efficiency and effectiveness of hospitals and health services, state-wide.”
“Now that the Hospital and Health Board Members have been announced, the recruitment of Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Officers can be finalised.”
