New opioid policy to tackle dependence

Date:

Spokesperson:
TAS Minister for Health, Michelle O'Byrne

The Minister for Health, Michelle O'Byrne, today launched new policy and practice standards to help tackle the increasing use of opioid drugs in Tasmania.

Ms O'Byrne said the Tasmanian Opioid Pharmacotherapy Program, Policy and Clinical Practice Standards marry the latest evidence on treating opioid dependence with the needs of Tasmanians.

"For clients, the new framework will identify risks, ensure their involvement in clinical management plans, goal setting and treatment planning, and help re-establish them in their communities."

Ms O'Byrne said development of the policy and clinical practice standards involved local consultation and consideration of national and international evidence and guidelines.

"This will play a significant role in combating the increasing use of opioid drugs in Tasmania," Ms O'Byrne said.

The document replaces the out-dated Tasmanian Methadone Policy 2000, and follows the release of the world-leading report A Review of Opioid Prescribing in Tasmania - A Blueprint for the Future.

Ms O'Byrne said the policy and practice standards will be rolled out over coming months, with Alcohol and Drug Services providing training and resources to help the sector align their practise with the new framework.

"I thank Alcohol and Drug Services and the alcohol, tobacco and other drugs sector for developing this new framework to ensure individuals and their families affected by opioid dependence receive safe and effective treatment."
