Board & Council Members

The Australian Healthcare & Hospitals Association is the nation's 'voice of public healthcare'. It has a key role as the sole national industry body representing the public and not-for-profit health sectors. AHHA is affiliated with the International and Asian Hospital Federations.

AHHA's Board and Council members represent the broad continuum of healthcare services including area, regional and district health services, hospitals, community and primary health centres, aged and extended care facilities.

The National Board (Governance) consists of up to 8 Directors (who are elected by and from the National Council annually plus Immediate Past President when relevant), 1 President, 2 Vice-presidents, 1 Treasurer, 1 Academic Member, 2 Directors and up to 2 co-opted experts.

The National Board has overall responsibility for governance including the strategic direction and operational efficiency of the organisation, the protection of its assets and the quality of its services. Its members represent the broad continuum of healthcare services including area, regional and district health services, hospitals, community and primary health centres, aged and extended care facilities. Members of AHHA's National Board and Council come from services in all these sectors as well as academia and government. They are either elected by members or nominated by state branches.

There are up to 36 Councillors elected/appointed annually. Up to 30 members are nominated by Branches: NT (2 Councillors), ACT (3 Councillors), TAS (3 Councillors), QLD (4 Councillors), SA (4 Councillors), WA (4 Councillors), NSW (5 Councillors), VIC (5 Councillors). There are further 5 Councillors elected by members: Personal Members (1), Associate Members (1), Membership Champion Network (1), Academic Members (2).

There are two representatives/observers from the International Hospital Federation and the Asian Hospital Federation.

The responsibilities of the National Council are to appoint the Directors and oversee the professional activities of the AHHA including:

  • MEMBERSHIP –maintain a committed and loyal membership
  • POLICY DEVELOPMENT –maintain a highly visible policy development program utilising the diverse expertise of members
  • ADVOCACY - promote and advance the implementation of innovative policies which are accepted and well-resourced by governments
  • REPRESENTATION – advocate for and represent members on matters of interest or concern to them
  • NETWORKS –maintain international and national networks of people working in healthcare organisations, creating a stimulating environment for learning through analysis, review, sharing and development of health policy and practice
  • PUBLICATIONS – publish relevant and current information on health industry research, innovations, policies, news and events
  • EVENTS – convene stimulating events (Conferences, Policy Think Tanks, Roundtables, Seminars)
  • TRAINING – provide, through partnerships, exclusive training programs for health service professionals
  • JUST HEALTH CONSULTANTS – provide a consultancy business to support the ongoing provision of high quality membership products and services. 

 

National Secretariat

The National Secretariat was established in Sydney in 1974 but was moved to Canberra in 1982 where it is still located.
