A COMPASS for integrated care: Delivering value in paediatric mental health

Delivering the integrated, multidisciplinary care that people and communities increasingly need is inherently challenging in Australia’s highly siloed healthcare system.

Value-based health care provides a framework for services to come together around the needs of individuals, with the aim of not only driving improvements in the outcomes and experiences of consumers – but also in enhancing the experiences of clinicians who are continuously challenged to do more with less support.

This is the experience that led to the COMPASS model, developed in response to an increased demand for paediatric mental health services during the COVID-19 pandemic but as systemic barriers such as service fragmentation, long wait times and inadequate training of community-based clinicians stifled effective care delivery.

COMPASS (Connecting Mental-health Paediatric Specialists and community Services) has sought to build clinician confidence in managing child and adolescent mental health disorders, as well as reduce reliance on specialists’ services, foster collaborative care – and importantly, support clinician wellbeing by reducing feelings of professional isolation and burnout.

In our next VBHC webinar, we are joined by the team behind COMPASS, now in its 5th year in north west Melbourne. We will explore how COMPASS has driven improvements in not only the experience of clinicians but in the outcomes of the community, and what is needed now to see the pilot scaled and embedded across the many diverse contexts of Australia while keeping families and communities at the centre.
