Investing in DIAMONDS: transforming a surgical waitlist into a ‘preparation list’

Value-based health care requires us to look across pathways of care to identify areas of high value care where investment and optimisation can enhance service efficiency, improve outcomes, and reduce downstream pressures on the health system.

Perioperative medicine provides a practical example of this, emphasising the importance of an integrated, planned, and personalised approach across the surgical care pathway. Investing in high value elements of the pathway, such as identifying and optimising people prior to surgery, improves the patient experience and outcomes. This approach lowers the occurrence of postoperative issues,  shortens hospital stay, and minimises readmissions after surgery. Additionally, it boosts workforce satisfaction and engagement therefore enabling staff to form stronger connections with their patients and focus on providing high quality care.

Join us for our next VBHC webinar where we will hear from The Northern Sydney Local Health District team responsible for the DIAMONDS initiative, an innovative approach transforming the surgical waitlist into a ‘preparation list.’ The DIAMONDS initiative enables healthcare professionals to optimise patient care in the months leading up to surgery, through streamlining assessments and addressing the challenges of the existing paper-based system through digital solutions. This webinar will explore the process of developing this initiative, the lessons learned along the way, and the benefits to both staff and patients of investing in high value interventions early in the care pathway.
