Executive Director, Geneva Centre of Healthcare Leadership for Sustainability

The Executive Director will provide strategic leadership to the Geneva Centre of Healthcare Leadership for Sustainability, holding principal responsibility for the development and implementation of the Centre’s strategic vision, goals and workplan, and management of its operations. Superior organisational and stakeholder management skills, political nous, effective communication skills, and the ability to engage positively across a broad spectrum of supporters and collaborators from the health professions, government, philanthropy, and business are essential.
The Executive Director will have a strong commitment to the centre’s organisational goals, and an ability to deliver an ambitious workplan to achieve them. Collaborative by nature, the Executive Director will lead a core team of staff and report directly to the IHF’s Chief Executive Officer, with the IHF providing all administrative needs of the of Healthcare Leadership for Sustainability.

Principal Duties and Responsibilites

The post-holder will be responsible for:
Organisational Leadership:

  • Holding principal responsibility for the successful development and implementation of the Geneva Centre for Healthcare Leadership for Sustainability’s vision, goals, and multi-year work plan.
  • Leading strategic management of the operations of the Centre, including resource planning, budget monitoring and people management (including recruitment, selection, employment/engagement, and orientation of staff).
  • Ensuring that the Centre’s portfolio of work is driven by insight and is based on best practice for the intended outcomes.
  • Growing the identity and activities of the Centre, so it becomes a globally recognised and respected entity in regard to sustainability and healthcare leadership.
  • Providing effective, visible leadership, acting as a role model to the staff, partners, and stakeholders of the Centre, demonstrating high levels of integrity, transparency, and compassion.

Strategy and Governance:

  • Collaborating with the Centre’s Global Steering Committee to determine programmatic imperatives and engaging with the IHF’s Executive Committee to ensure good governance and a results-orientated oriented approach for the centre’s key constituents: hospital leaders.
  • Developing a multi-year strategic workplan and associated products for the centre, focused on capacity-building training, executive education programmes, knowledge exchange and instructional tools, and working closely with the Centre’s Global Steering Committee to strengthen these offerings.
  • Leading effective reporting and governance processes for the centre’s portfolio of work, ensuring that:
    • Robust management plans in place with well-defined metrics of success, clear responsibilities and accountabilities, and timescales for delivery.
    • Key programmatic milestones are met, agreed deliverables are produced, and that all issues, risks, and changes are managed appropriately.
  • Overseeing the production of key strategic documents in support of the Centre’s work, such as strategic business cases and funding/grant applications to enhance revenue streams.

Partnership Building and Engagement

  • Identifying and creating opportunities for partnerships with a wide range of key stakeholders in the sectors of sustainability and healthcare (including hospital leaders, clinical executives, third sector entities and academic institutions at both national/international levels) to develop meaningful and mutually beneficial collaborations in support of the Centre’s work.
  • Acting as an executive spokesperson for the Centre to external groups including media, government agencies, non-profit organisations, funders, academia, and healthcare organisations.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to raise additional financial resource for the Centre.

Profile Requirements

Qualifications and Professional Experience: 

  • Have ten years of leadership experience in similar organisations concerning healthcare strategy and policy, climate change and sustainability. 
  • Educated to Masters degree level in a relevant field (e.g., health policy, public health, environmental sciences), or must be able to demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience, which may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. 
  • Have a deep understanding of the links between climate change and health, and knowledge of the strategies needed deliver net zero healthcare services and developing and delivering complex programmes with demonstrable impact.

Organisational Leadership:

  • A track record of successfully developing and implementing multi-year strategic work plans, managing financial budgets and resource planning.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage, motivate and lead staff in common pursuit of organisational goals and the delivery of work-plans. 
  • Demonstrable self-awareness, an understanding of leadership impact on others and ability to manage self and maintain professional conduct in challenging or ambiguous situations.

Communications and Partnership Engagement:

  • Sound political judgment, resilience, and the ability to forge and manage partnerships across a range of agendas, at national and international levels.
  • Proven ability to develop and build effective relationships in pursuit of common goals and the delivery of work-plans.
  • Experience in communicating confidently and with credibility, using appropriate tools and language to large and varied audience of internal and external stakeholders.


  • Be self-supporting, with a strong motivation and passionate commitment to achieving effective action against climate change, in support of improving human health. 
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office systems, including MS Word, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel and SharePoint.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally and be able to work remotely, blending in-person and virtual approaches as required.
