The Australian Healthcare & Hospitals Association (AHHA) today welcomed the appointment of Tanya Plibersek as Minister for Health and congratulated Nicola Roxon on her new role as Attorney General.

The Australian Healthcare & Hospitals Association is the independent peak membership body and advocate for the Australian healthcare system and a national voice for universally accessible, high quality healthcare.

“On behalf of our members, AHHA would like to welcome Tanya Plibersek to the important and challenging portfolio of Health. Ms Plibersek has an impressive record of achievement in promoting high quality public services and driving reforms which support a strong public sector. We are confident that she will bring the same enthusiasm and commitment to her new role,” Ms Prue Power, AHHA Executive Director said today.

"AHHA would also like to congratulate outgoing Minister Nicola Roxon for her appointment as Australia's first female Attorney General. Ms Roxon has been an outstanding Health Minister and has instigated a comprehensive reform agenda that will transform Australia's health system so it can meet our future health care needs. This has been a challenging task, involving balancing a broad range of interests and professional groups, and Ms Roxon has shown impressive leadership and vision in overseeing this process.

"In addition, AHHA welcomes the promotion of the Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler to Cabinet. These are crucial areas of the health portfolio which will benefit from being represented by a Cabinet Minister. AHHA supports the addition of Social Inclusion to Mr Butler's portfolio and hopes that this will ensure that our health system and other public services reflect our community's values of fairness and equity.

""The next three years will be a crucial period for the implementation of the planned health system reforms. AHHA welcomes the new Minister for Health and looks forward to working with her, her Ministerial colleagues and other stakeholders to develop a strong, fair and sustainable health system for Australia's future, Ms Power said.
