Dr Martin Dooland honoured

Thursday, June 13, 2013

The Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) today congratulated AHHA National Councillor Dr Martin Dooland on his appointment as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia. This well-deserved honour was conferred in recognition of Dr Dooland’s longstanding commitment to improving the oral health of Australians.

The Australian Healthcare & Hospitals Association represents Australia’s largest group of health care providers in public hospitals, community and primary health sectors and advocates for universal high quality healthcare to benefit the whole community.

“Dr Dooland has led public dental services in Victoria and South Australia for nearly 20 years.  He has had significant influence on oral and dental health policy and service provision at the state and national level,” Mr Andrew McAuliffe, Acting CEO, AHHA, said today.

“In 1992 Dr Dooland authored a National Health Strategy paper - Improving Dental Health in Australia - which became the blueprint for the Commonwealth Dental Health Program in 1994. He was a member of the National Advisory Committee on Oral Health, 1993-1996 and 2002-2004; and was instrumental in the development of Australia's first National Oral Health Plan 'Healthy Mouths Healthy Lives 2004-2013'.  As Executive Secretary, National Oral Health Plan Monitoring Group, he coordinated regular progress reports to the Australian Health Ministers' Council.

“In 2011 he was an Appointed Member of the Prime Minister's National Advisory Council on Dental Health, the recommendations of which have formed the basis for the new Grow Up Smiling children's dental benefit program. In May, Dr Dooland was awarded honorary life membership of the AHHA in recognition of his contribution to the AHHA and this subsequent honour is further acknowledgement of Dr Dooland's significant influence on oral health policy and service delivery.

“Dr Dooland has worked tirelessly throughout his career to improve the dental health of the Australian community and his influence that will be felt for many years to come.  AHHA congratulates Dr Dooland on this well-deserved honour and looks forward to continuing to work with him to ensure that all Australians can access high quality and preventive oral health care," said Andrew McAuliffe acting Chief Executive AHHA.
