Health services research

Health services research is multidisciplinary, cross-sector research focused on learning health systems and underpinning the effective management and delivery of health services in Australia. Health services that integrate health services research result in direct benefits in patient outcomes, overall quality of care, and improvements in healthcare costs and policy development.
Equality for LGBTIQA+ people in health

Many LGBTIQA+ people experience happy and healthy lives – yet overwhelmingly, the LGBTIQA+ community experience poorer health outcomes than the general population. Experiences of stigma, marginalisation, and discrimination directly and indirectly impede the equity and accessibility of care for LGBTIQA+ persons, exacerbating experiences of minority stress and compounding poor health outcomes.
Chronic disease

Chronic diseases are occurring earlier in life, and as a result many Australians are living longer with chronic diseases and more complex care needs. Individuals will increasingly find themselves in need of multiple types of care, from a range of providers, across various care sectors over extended periods of time. Changes are needed to achieve an accessible, equitable and sustainable health system that responds effectively to the needs of people living with chronic diseases.
Aiming for value in health

Ensuring the sustainability of the health system is a prevalent, ongoing concern in the Australian healthcare context. Health system sustainability must be addressed by shifting away from volume-driven healthcare approaches to a value-based model which promote outcomes that matter to people and communities. The global value-based health care (VBHC) movement provides a lens through which we can examine the wicked issues undermining health system sustainability.
