Our blueprint for health reform

Healthy people, healthy systems

The Blueprint makes a range of short, medium and long term recommendations on how to reorientate our health system to focus on patient outcomes and value rather than throughput and vested interests. It maps out how to transform our health system into a fit for purpose 21st century system that will meet the needs and expectations of Australians.

The first iteration was published in 2017 and in January 2021, AHHA published the refreshed Blueprint which endeavours to reflect contemporary governance and funding arrangements. Supplements have been developed to explore in more depth emerging issues.

The Blueprint and the supplementary papers have been developed through substantial consultation with, and input from, AHHA’s Board, broad membership and stakeholders across the hospital, primary and community health sectors—including clinicians, academics, policymakers, administrators and consumers.

Blueprint supplement

Effective and sustainable adoption of virtual health care is a supplementary paper to AHHA’s blueprint for health reform.

With Australians more open to using technology in health care, this has led to optimism across the sector that there will be a willingness to embrace these technologies in care to achieve more long-term health care reform. This paper outlines essential areas of attention to ensure that virtual health care technologies are implemented effectively and sustainably.

Blueprint supplement

Enabling person-centred team-based care is a supplementary paper to AHHA’s blueprint for health reform.

The need for integrated, team-based models of care has been promoted for decades, yet the system is still facing challenges in operationalising such models. This paper outlines areas which require sector wide attention to ensure that person-centred, team-based care is effectively implemented in Australia.
