The Focused Accelerated Surgical Treatment for Total Knee Replacement (FAST-TKR) initiative at National University Hospital (NUH) embodies an innovative approach to managing the recovery of knee replacement patients. This program, designed specifically to address the evolving needs of an aging population and the increasing demand for efficient surgical recoveries, significantly reduces hospital stays without compromising the quality of care.
FAST-TKR integrates a variety of strategic elements: pre-operative planning that includes detailed patient education through our established Joint School, streamlined surgical techniques, and meticulous post-operative care protocols. These components are crucial in facilitating early discharge and supporting recovery in the home environment. The program leverages a multidisciplinary team approach, involving surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, all working in concert to ensure a continuum of care.
Moreover, by partnering with local community hospitals, day-rehabilitation centres and home care services, FAST-TKR ensures that patients receive ongoing, specialized care once they leave the hospital. This model not only optimizes resource utilization across the healthcare system but also places patient comfort and recovery at the forefront of post-operative care.
The ultimate goal of FAST-TKR is to set a new standard for post-operative treatment in orthopaedics, promoting rapid recovery through innovative practices that can be adapted and applied to other surgical disciplines. This project represents a significant step forward in surgical care, striving for excellence in patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
